The regulation of feelings

When a person has difficulty to relate to their own feelings, it can be difficult for themto relate to other people.  That is why it's important to be conscious over how our feelings influence us and what we can do to be as best as possible within ourselves in relation to others. Some feelings are seen as more acceptable and others as less for example jealousy, anger and shame.  Feelings can help us in some situations. But to know if the feeling is really of help, we have to be conscious over what is happening inside of ourselves. When we clearly see what we are thinking and feeling, it can be easier to adecuate our actions with the situations we're in. They guide us towards the right way and give us motivation and energy to act. There's 3 ways to regulate feelings in: 1. The way focused on threats and autoprotection.  2. The way focused on doing and achieving 3. The way focused on security and satisfaction One of the most fascinating things about the huma...

The feelings and their functions

Some feelings surpass rational thinking, for example anger and fear, which make thinking clearly difficult.  Our alarm turns on quickly and brusquely and often in wrongful situations. This tires a lot and uses a lot of energy.  Situations of this type that entail to desctructive reactions of escape and avoidance are called anxiety.  The cerebral cortex balances the feelings. THE FUNCTION OF THE FEELINGS Although we manage and express the feelings differently, we experience these in almost the same way. The reason is the construction of the human brain.  Fear : helps us look for protection and avoid danger.  Sadness : gives space to reflect and makes us understand/see what and whom means something for us. We reflect over the reason for life and the meaning of loss.  Shame : helps us adapt to what is socially acceptable so that we don't violate the social norms and rules. It makes us cancel an action, hide or run away.  Anger : helps u...

Our brains can be formed

If one thinks of something that gives him security, he increases the activity in the point of the brain that produces that feeling.  If one repeats this various times, it will become easier for one to feel in security. If one got many deceiving experiences with others which were able to traumatise him, his trauma could disappear if he meets people who show support and compassion.  These experiences change the structures of the brain, which could make a person that went through a deception able to trust again.

Amygdala, mirror neurons, neurotransmitters & hormones

The amygdala is the part of the brain related with fear. It is an alarm system.  When our feelings are activated, the amygdala receives information from our senses, evaluates this information and distributes it. After this, it controls what parts of the brain should be activated to create an adecuate reaction. This makes us react in a strong way because we have a huge fear to being abandoned. The mirror neurons are nervous cells in the social part of the brain which makes us understand the motives of others or being able to put ourselves in their position.  The oxytocin is a hormone that makes us feel proximity and atention towards other people. The testasteron is the opposite of the oxytocin. It decreases the capacity to put one's self in another person's position and the understanding of their situation.

Threat system

Reactions: The physiological activation of the amygdala helps us perceive danger and react to it. Feeling like anger, anxiety and rejection helps us protect ourselves. Acts like escaping or fighting help us survive danger. Thoughts about the risk help us realise the danger even before it gets to us.  Memories -help us see dangers based on previous experiences. They also remind us of what we've learned before.  When the threat system is activated, something happens to the way we think: we concentrate on the danger and do not see the positive. For ex. when one is in good company and everything seems alright and suddenly remembers that he could have left the house unclosed. One can't think of anything else but that and gets nervous and uncomfortable. He imagines what could happen if someone got in. His way of seeing everything changes in a second and no comforting thought helps - the person is emotionally kidnapped.  The threat system can activate many feelings ...
