Controlling the feelings

Many people have a tendency to control their feelings to avoid feeling them. This gives often the opposite effect.

The more one tries to control feelings, the worst they get. This is a central problem for many people suffering from psychological problems.

Ways used to control are drugs, alcohol, overeating, excessive work outs, self harm etc.

Some people are scared to be perceived by others as weak if they ever show their feelings; this is why it's so typical for many to hide their feelings and act like they are fine when they're not. Anxiety and depression are clear examples.
Also the pride over self achievements can many times be hidden in fear of being perceived as cocky.

To many people, being able to oppress and hide feelings is idealized.

Ironically, the less feelings are being controlled and just left alone, the more control one has. If sadness is accepted and left without desperately trying to control it or totally oppress it, we'd perceive it as less scary and overwhelming.

When one feels sadness and keeps going on with their day normally, trying to hide it from family and friends, any little occurance can be enough to make them ''explode''.
In others words, one ends up reacting in a much more dramatic way than if one since the start had accepted the feeling.

Letting our feelings flow naturally and welcome them makes us realise that they are a part of life and that bad feelings do not stay forever.
